To install Ubuntu Mate on your system you should first download the Ubuntu Mate ISO image at https://ubuntu-mate.org/download/
Depending on what system you are planning to install choose the Architecture that matches your system.
On the next screen, you will have the release options for Download. Please refer to our guide Introduction to Ubuntu Linux to see what each release means and which one would be the right release for you.
After downloading the ISO Image create a Flash Drive for the install. (See our guide on how to create a Flash Drive using Rufus).
After creating the Flash Drive we will start the installation process. You should look up on your system Manufacturer’s website on how to boot your system from Flash Drive.
Install Ubuntu Mate
Once your computer reboots into your USB drive, you’ll be ready to begin installing Ubuntu Mate:
When the computer first boots up, you’ll be given the option to choose between trying Xubuntu and installing it. Press Install Ubuntu MATE.
It might take a few seconds to load up the Ubuntu installer. When it starts, it will ask for your preferred language. Select it, and press Continue.
If you’re using a wireless connection, Ubuntu will ask you to connect to a network. Locate your network from the list, and log in.
The setup will ask if you want to update Ubuntu as you install and download any third-party software that your system may need. Check Install third-party software, then Continue.
Next, you’ll determine how Ubuntu handles your hard drive. If you don’t have anything on it or are ready to wipe it clean and start over with Ubuntu, leave Erase disk and install Ubuntu checked, and press Install Now.
If you have Windows installed on your system it might give you an option to set up Ubuntu alongside Windows. To have both Operating systems and dual boot choose that option.
Click Install now
Otherwise, if you want something entirely custom, pick Something else. You’ll need to know how to partition a disk yourself, as in the image below.
Ubuntu will begin installing in the background. In the meantime, tell Ubuntu which timezone you’re in.
Then, set up your user account. Fill in the fields for your name, username, the computer’s name, and your password. Make sure that the password is strong; the account will have admin access.
Wait while Ubuntu sets itself up on your system.
When it’s finished, you’ll see a message letting you know that the installation was successful. Press Reboot Now to restart into your new Ubuntu install.
When the computer comes back on, you’ll see the Ubuntu Mate login screen. Enter the password you set for yourself to log in to your new Ubuntu desktop.
Start using your new system by clicking on the Menu on top Left corner of the screen.
