The development team behind the KDE neon rolling release distribution announced that they’ve released KDE neon 6.2, based on the latest Ubuntu 24.04 LTS (Noble Numbat) operating system series.

Based on a long-term supported Ubuntu release and featuring the latest KDE software and Plasma desktop environment, the KDE neon distribution uses a rolling release model where users do not have to download new ISO images or reinstall their systems.

However, every two years, the KDE neon devs rebase their distro on the latest Ubuntu LTS series. This week, KDE neon has been rebased on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS (Noble Numbat), which not only includes the latest security patches and software updates, but it also ships with a newer kernel for better hardware support.

“We have just switched on the upgrade for KDE neon to rebase on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS,” said the devs. “We do this every two years and the 22.04 LTS base was getting increasingly crusty with old Pipewire causing problems and packages like Krita not compiling at all.”

Existing KDE neon users will see a pop-up notification on their screens in the next few days to upgrade their installations to KDE neon 6.2, which is based on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS. But, before attempting to upgrade your KDE neon machines, ensure you have a recent backup of your most important files.

If you don’t see a notification or want to expedite the process, you can manually upgrade your KDE neon installations by following the Noble Upgrade instructions provided by the KDE neon developers.

There’s also a new ISO release of KDE neon 6.2 for those who want to deploy the Ubuntu-based distribution on new computers or reinstall their systems. And, in case you’re wondering, the latest KDE neon ISO image ships with the recently released KDE Plasma 6.2 desktop environment by default.
